ADHD-Specific Crisis Support

When ADHD feels overwhelming

  • • Step away from sensory overload: dim lights, reduce noise, and breathe slowly.
  • • Use grounding tools (5-4-3-2-1, cold water, stretching) to reset your nervous system.
  • • Follow your NHS safety plan or contact your CMHT (Community Mental Health Team) if you have one.
  • • Let a trusted friend, family member, or peer mentor know you’re struggling and agree a check-in time.
  • • If medication side-effects worry you, call your GP, psychiatrist, or NHS 111 for urgent advice.

Where to find ADHD-specific help

  • ADHD UK helpline (info@adhduk.co.uk) and peer groups across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  • ADHD Foundation coaching and wellbeing webinars: adhdfoundation.org.uk.
  • Right to Choose providers for faster NHS assessments: guidance at adhduk.co.uk.
  • Mind and Rethink local crisis houses, safe spaces, and advocacy.

Create a Safety Plan

Having a plan can help during difficult times. Consider creating a safety plan that includes:

  • • Warning signs that a crisis may be developing.
  • • Coping strategies that help you feel grounded (add them to the Staying Safe template).
  • • People and community spaces that offer distraction or calm.
  • • Trusted contacts you can ask for help (friends, family, peer groups).
  • • Professional numbers (GP, psychiatrist, crisis team, helplines).
  • • Steps for making your environment safe and keeping emergency meds organised.
